Municipal Government

Wisner has a mayor-council form of government. The mayor and council members are elected on 4-year terms. The Wisner city council meets at the City office council chambers on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

County Government

Cuming County has 16 townships and is governed by a seven-member board of supervisors, who are elected by popular vote for four-year terms. The county is zoned. West Point, Nebraska, located 15 miles southeast of Wisner is the county seat for Cuming County. For more information on county government, visit www.co.cuming.ne.us.

Fire Protection

Fire protection is provided in the community by a 45-member volunteer fire department. The department provides protection for areas outside the city limits within the Rural Fire District and responds to mutual aid calls. Wisner has 40 fire hydrants.

Law Enforcement

• Police Department - The Wisner Police Department is staffed by two full-time certified officers. Equipment in the department includes a cruiser with in-car video, radar, radio communications, and other standard equipment. The department is dispatched through an E-911 system in West Point.

• Sheriff's Department - The Cuming County Sheriff's Department in West Point, 15 miles away, employs a sheriff, one deputy in Beemer, two deputies in Wisner, one deputy in West Point, and an office manager. Regular patrol provides protection to existing industries by the police and sheriff's departments. The crime rate per 1,000 population in Cuming County in 1997 was 8.8 compared to a state crime rate of 42.4 and a 1996 national rate of 50.8.

• Dispatch Center - The Cuming County Dispatch Center, located in the Cuming County Courthouse in West Point, is staffed by one part-time and four full-time dispatchers. These dispatchers respond to all calls received from the countywide E-911 system.

• State Patrol - Troop B of the Nebraska State Patrol headquartered in Norfolk, 26 miles, serves 23 counties. Two patrolmen and one K-9 dogs are stationed in Oakland, Columbus and South Sioux City, Neb. Two additional patrolmen are stationed at West Point, 15 miles southeast of Wisner. Norfolk, has a criminal & drug investigator with an emergency response team. A state patrol sargent is stationed in Oakland along with two troopers; one is a drug recognition expert and Haz-Mat team member.
