Education

• City School System - School District #30 in Cuming, Stanton, and Wayne Counties covers 204 square miles. Wisner-Pilger has a reputation for excellent schools. Internet is available at all schools. A full complement of vocational courses are offered in the high school. Daytime dual credit and advanced placement courses are offered in the high school curriculum. It is estimated that 99 percent of the eighth grade students finish high school.

• Educational Service Unit - Wisner participates in Educational Service Unit No. 2, which is head quartered in Fremont and serves four counties. Services are available in speech therapy, testing for special education, audio-visual supplements, and resources for all education.

• Higher Education - Wisner is part of the Northeast Community College service area that includes the 20 counties of Northeast Nebraska. The main campus is located in Norfolk and off-campus centers are located in communities throughout the region. Northeast offers more than 60 technical, vocational, and liberal arts programs preparing students for immediate employment or for transfer to a four-year college or university.

  The Continuing Education and Distance Learning Division provides credit programs, job-upgrading and personal interest classes in 72 communities throughout the area, including the towns in Cuming County. Northeast also works with area industries, retail and service establishments, agriculture and other agencies and organizations in planning in-service and in-plant training programs.   The Lifelong Learning Center, built on the Northeast Community College Campus, is a clearinghouse for regional educational offerings from Northeast, Wayne State College, the University of Nebraska, and other public and private institutions. The center uses fiber optic and satellite technology to broadcast and receive all types of educational programming. Communities with satellite and special videoconferencing technology can receive the programming. The Lifelong Learning Center also serves as a location for workshops, conferences and meetings.

  Wayne State College (WSC) located in Wayne, Nebraska, 20 miles northwest of Wisner, serves approximately 4,000 students from throughout Nebraska and Iowa as well as several other states and some foreign countries. WSC offers nearly 40 majors and minors in eight academic divisions. Master's degrees are also available in business and education.

  Other colleges, universities, and community colleges frequently attended by Wisner High School graduates include: Dana College, Midland Lutheran College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Union College, Wesleyan University, Northeast Community College, Creighton University, University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Wayne State College.

Medical

• Wisner Clinic - Open three days a week, this clinic is staffed by two general practitioners. Laboratory and x-ray services are available in the clinic located at 1101 9th Street. Phone: (402) 529-3218 (days) or (402) 375-3800 (after hours).

• Wisner Family Practice - Operated by Franciscan Care Services in West Point, this clinic is open two days each week. The clinic is staffed by one general practitioner and one physician's assistant. The clinic is located at 1000 Avenue F. The clinic phone is (402) 529-6516.

• Rescue Squad - The rescue squad in Wisner includes 10 Emergency Medical Technicians-AD and a first responder. Two ambulances are owned by the Wisner Volunteer Fire Department.

• Franciscan Care Services - Based in West Point, 15 miles southeast of Wisner, Franciscan Care Services is an integrated health system serving Cuming County and the surrounding area. The system includes St. Francis Memorial Hospital, the Dinklage Medical Clinic, and St. Joseph's Retirement Community. Medical clinics are also operated in Oakland, Scribner, and Wisner. A wide range of primary care services are offered as well as wellness programs, exercise gym, support groups, social services, and mental health. The local medical staff includes five specialists in Family Medicine and three Physician Assistants. The entire medical staff is board certified.

• Providence Medical Center (PMC), located 20 miles north of Wisner in Wayne, Nebraska, PMC is owned by the Missionary Benedictine Sisters. PMC is a 34-bed, acute care facility with a six-bassinet nursery serving northeast Nebraska. In addition to acute care, PMC provides skilled/swing-bed, intermediate and domicilary care. PMC provides Medicare certified home health and hospice care and private pay personal care. The Providence Wellness Center within the PMC, open since 1993, offers members the best in exercise technology. Individual, family, and corporate memberships are available. The Northeast Nebraska Medical Group P.C. resides in the PMC's new addition. Open since 1996, the group is staffed by five physicians and one physician's assistant.

• Pender Community Hospital, located 20 miles northwest of Wisner, and Faith Regional Health Services (East Campus and West Campus), 26 miles from Wisner, in Wayne also serve the community.

Elderly Care

Wisner Care Center, built in 1970, is a 38-bed skilled nursing facility approved by Medicare. Fourteen newly constructed assisted living rooms were opened in May, 2001. Physical therapy and rehabilitation services are provided. Adult daycare, hospice care, and respite care are available.

Library

The Wisner Public Library contains 8,003 volumes and has an average circulation of 150 volumes per day. Library activities include a story hour. Internet is available to the public.

Housing

New construction is available in Wisner. It is estimated that 90 percent of the 650 homes in Wisner are owner-occupied. The cost of new construction from 1993-1998 averaged $120,000. Monthly rental costs of a three-bedroom home average $300, and apartment rentals average $225 per month. Apartments and independent living units are also available for low-income families and elderly.
