Industrial Development

The Wisner Community Development works with the city of Wisner toward industrial development in the community. The Wisner Community Development is a nonprofit corporation with an 11-member board. Money is raised as needed. Approximately 17 acres of land in and adjacent to the community are zoned for industry. The price of this land ranges from $2,500 to $6,500 per acre. Local Economy

Basic economic activities of Wisner include farming and cattle and hog feeding. Wisner is known as the livestock center of the state.

The primary retail trade area extends 5 miles west, 6 miles north, 7 miles southeast, and 11 miles south and contains approximately 3,310 people. Retail firms in the community with retail sales permits developed annual net taxable retail sales above $8 million in 1997. Three wholesale firms in the community distribute feeds and wood pallets.

Labor Potential

A well-educated labor force provides significant benefits to Nebraska employers. Nebraska workers are among the most productive, are readily trainable, and are known for their strong work orientation and technical proficiency. Wisner labor is no exception. Low absenteeism and labor turnover rates, combined with mechanically adept and readily trainable workers, directly translate into industry profitability.

Nebraska has a right-to-work provision in its constitution. In 1996, 10.6 percent of Nebraska's manufacturing workers were members of labor unions compared to a national figure of 17.2 percent. Union membership in Nebraska is concentrated in the railroad and packinghouse industries. Less than one percent of the total nonagricultural labor force in Wisner is unionized.
